Albania suits almost every season, but the right month depends on what you want to do. Here is how the year works for beaches, cities and mountains.
Spring (April to June)
Spring is one of the most comfortable times for sightseeing. Temperatures are mild, the countryside is green and archaeological sites such as Butrint and Apollonia are quiet. The sea is still cool, so this is a better season for cities, UNESCO towns and day trips than for swimming.
Summer (June to August)
Summer is beach season on the Albanian Riviera, in Saranda, Ksamil, Vlorë and Durrës. It is also the busiest and hottest period, so book accommodation and transport early and plan sightseeing for the morning or evening. Mountain areas such as Valbona and Theth are cooler and open for hiking from late spring to early autumn.
Autumn (September to October)
Early autumn combines warm sea water with fewer visitors, which makes September a popular choice for a mix of beach days and sightseeing. October is cooler and works well for cities, food and wine regions.
Winter (November to March)
Winter is the quiet season. Lowland cities are mild but can be rainy, while the mountains get snow and some mountain roads and guesthouses close. It is a good time for city breaks in Tirana, Shkodër or Korçë and for travellers who prefer low prices and no crowds.
So when should you go?
For a first trip that combines culture and coast, September or the shoulder months of May and June are a safe choice. For swimming, plan July to early September. For hiking in the Albanian Alps, choose late June to September.
