Apollonia & Ardenica: Explore Albania’s Ancient History
Today, we journey to Apollonia, one of Albania’s most significant ancient cities, built to honor the god Apollo. Known historically as Apollonia Prima, it played an important role in education and politics — even hosting Augustus Octavian, nephew of Julius Caesar, for studies in oratory.
A day trip to Apollonia offers a fascinating exploration of ancient architecture, cultural heritage, and historical monuments in a single excursion.
🏛️ Must-See Sites in Apollonia
The Apollonia archaeological site features a variety of impressive landmarks. Key highlights include the Encircling Wall, Terraced Wall with arched gates, Monument of Agonothetes, the Library, the Odeon, Portico, the House with Mosaics, the Apollonia Museum, and the Church of Saint Mary. Entering through the small iron gate, visitors walk toward the central group of ancient religious and commercial buildings.
⛪ Ardenica Monastery – Historical Landmark
After Apollonia, we continue to Ardenica Monastery, located near the village of Kolonja on a forested ridge parallel to the Durrës-Vlorë highway. This historic monastery is famous as the site where Albania’s national hero, Gjergj Kastrioti Skanderbeg, married Princess Andronika Arianiti. The monastery’s tower, nestled among pine trees, offers stunning views of the fertile Myzeqe lowlands.
