🏰 Gjirokastra Castle & Museums
Our visit begins with Gjirokastra Castle, the largest castle in Albania. Inside, explore the Weapons Museum, opened in 1971, showcasing historical arms and military artifacts. From the castle walls, enjoy panoramic views of the city and surrounding mountains.
🏠 Ethnographic Museum & Traditional Houses
Next, we visit the Ethnographic Museum, located in the birthplace of former communist leader Enver Hoxha in the Palorto quarter. Continue to the Zekati family house, a beautifully restored three-story building from 1811–1812 with twin towers, carved wooden ceilings, and a traditional guest room. From the third-floor balcony, enjoy stunning panoramic views of Gjirokastra.
Other notable houses include Angonati House, Babara House, Skendulaj House, Eqrem Cabej House (under restoration), and Kikino House. We will also see the main square statue dedicated to patriot Çerçiz Topulli and important religious sites of the Bektashi sect and Orthodox Church.
📜 Sokaku i të Marrëve & Literary Heritage
A famous stop is Sokaku i të Marrëve, also known as “Mad People Street,” where you can see the reconstructed house of renowned Albanian writer Ismail Kadare. This street reflects the city’s unique blend of history, culture, and local stories.
🍴 Local Cuisine
Gjirokastra is famous for its culinary traditions. During the tour, enjoy tasting local specialties such as pasha qofte, shapkat, and oshaf with dried figs, a traditional dessert made with sheep’s milk, sugar, and dried figs.
